This EP attempts two main things: first, to reconnect my current and recent artistic interests with the reason I got into music in the first place, over twenty years ago – playing bass, and; second, to put something out, no matter how rough it may be, for the first time since around 2021. Over the past couple of years I have been trying to reconnect with my earlier love of and curiosity about music (and, more broadly, sound). Track 03 in particular samples some of my recent and earlier work, bridging those gaps. This EP is an exploration of real-time instrument design that I have worked on in 2026 using machine learning within MaxMSP (I will state here that I am vehemently against generative AI, and consider and acknowledge that onboard machine-learning, whilst not innocent in its computational expense to design and implement originally, only utilises local processing power for all ML data training). This system has allowed me to do with a bass guitar what I dreamed of might be possible with MIDI, but never was, facilitating real-time detection and playback in response to audio input.
Each track is a single-take improvisation reacting with and to the MaxMSP patch – a continuation of earlier practices creating pseudo-improvising agents on the computer, with a little post-production applied.
I dedicate this EP to my mother, who passed away somewhat suddenly in early August 2026. Without her support in the late 90s and early 00s, I doubt I would have pursued music. credits released September 25, 2026
